After college in 1997, she clerked for InStyle, a fellow Time Inc. publication, before taking a low-level job as editorial assistant on the swimsuit issue SI a year later. Part of this first job was sorting through some 30 000 bikinis that are subject to the issue and return them to the designers.
"I sat in a closet and matched bikinis for eight hours a day and returned to the designers," she said about her first job BI. "I made every part of the work from the ground up."
More than a decade later, having held positions at all levels of the journal, Day now runs things.
"It's part of the beauty of being here as long as I am here. I am very familiar with the product," she said. "I was able to sit and observe and form my own opinions about what works, what does not work, what could work better, how we can develop and grow."
"It was just a very long case study."
There are four members of the SI staff working exclusively on the Swimsuit Issue, and the day is the highest ranking. She travels all over the world for photoshoots, including places like Antarctica and Madagascar, where it is on a island with no electricity model Irina Shayk sides for 2015 show.

She is also in charge of overseeing a mark of 51 in a rapidly changing industry.
Since taking his current position in 2014, his plan was to extend the brand beyond its publication schedule once a year. Two years ago, the company launched Swim Daily, a website that promotes the issue with additional content throughout the year. This year, the Travel Channel aired a five-part "making of" documentary about the magazine.

All this, says Day, is part of a larger effort to humanize the models who know most people through the print product, and diversify their careers. The idea is to use ad

"I like to show people that they are more than just a pretty face," said Day. "You see someone like Chrissy Teigen one that is so captivating and completely hysterical and brilliant and has his hands in a thousand different things. If you see only in print, you are missing out on so much of that which is not just the visual image. "
"It is only our magazine to develop these strong women more than just a model."
Day is confident that his plan is working.
"We are at a level of popularity and response and respect that I do not think we've seen since the era of the supermodel in the late 80s, early 90s," she said.
"My ideas so far have worked. When I say I want to film in zero gravity, they're like, "OK?" but trust me. "
